Food Fit for a King
Bangkok-born chef Sorravis Paduang has opened his first Thai restaurant in Prenton.
The 54 year-old and his wife have settled in the Wirral town after establishing a strong reputation for innovative, high quality cuisine in their native land that earned him the highest acclaim - an invitation to cook for Thailand's King. "In our country the monarchy are held in the highest esteem. I was already getting recognised for the way I was cooking with fresh ingredients and spices, so when in 1991, I was asked to cook for the King it was the ultimate accolade." Sorravis’ food is centred around using the best and freshest ingredients available, one of the reasons he chose Wirral to open his restaurant.
"We had friends who studied at Liverpool University and had opened restaurants elsewhere in the North West, but Wirral seemed a natural choice to us. In the first few months since we opened we have found good sources for seafood, fresh vegetables and the important spices that are so important for Thai cuisine.
"We called the restaurant Salt and Chilli - it's something from when I was studying in Thailand - our tutors used to say Thai food is so delicate in its flavours just a pinch of salt or a hint of chilli is all you need - the name reminds us of those days!"
Sorravis has just celebrated Thai New Year and is now throwing open his restaurant for a month long celebration. "We have developed a Thai New Year menu that includes all the classic dishes people already know and love - soups, satay, sticky rice, noodles and Pad Thai - but we also have a few special dishes I am very proud of, Tempura Sea Bass, a beef steak prepared in the traditional Thai way and of course mussels, prawns and squid."
As part of the all month of celebrations, Salt and Chilli is offering a 10% discount to diners who pre-book in advance.
"Wirral has a good food scene and great restaurants. Local people like their food and we've had great feedback so far. I hope the New Year Celebration offer appeals to people who want to try the authentic taste of Thailand".
